Dana Benner, CFA

Managing Director, Institutional Equity Research, Head of Research

Oilfield Services

Prior to joining AltaCorp, Mr. Benner was Managing Director in Oilfield Services research at Stifel Nicolaus, formerly Thomas Weisel Partners and Westwind Partners, covering a large universe of Canadian drilling and oilfield services companies. Prior to Thomas Weisel Partners’ acquisition of Westwind Partners in 2008, he was responsible for opening Westwind’s Calgary office in 2004. Mr. Benner’s previous experience also includes working as a senior research analyst at RBC Dominion Securities and National Bank Financial (1995 – 2003). Mr. Benner began his career in investment research in 1992 as a research associate. He holds an Honors BA degree, with majors in Economics and English Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was a visiting student at Oxford University. Mr. Benner also holds the CFA designation. Outside of business, Mr. Benner’s largest volunteer commitment is in coaching both boys and girls community hockey.


John Chu, CFA

Managing Director, Institutional Equity Research

Prior to joining AltaCorp, Mr Chu was Senior Vice President in Agriculture and Industrials Research for 8 years at Mackie Research Capital (previously Research Capital). Prior thereto, he spent 3 years in equity research at Scotia Capital, and prior to that at HSBC Securities. Mr. Chu holds a B.A. (Honours) in Economics from Queens University, an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, and holds the CFA designation.


Dirk M. Lever, CA

Managing Director, Institutional Equity Research

Senior E&P and Oil Sands

Prior to joining AltaCorp, Mr. Lever was a Managing Director at RBC Capital Markets for nine years where he held various senior roles in trading, sales and equity research in Toronto. Mr. Lever was Head of North American Energy Sales (2008 - 2011) and Head of Income Trust Research (2004 – 2008.) Prior to RBC, Mr. Lever was an Equity Research Analyst at National Bank Financial (2000 – 2004) in Calgary. Mr. Lever was consistently a top ranked equity research analyst and was a sought after speaker on the Canadian Income Trust Industry. Mr. Lever has worked in Corporate Finance, Venture Capital, Private Equity and Merchant Banking and is a Chartered Accountant who specialized in income tax. Mr. Lever graduated with Honors from Simon Fraser University and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Finance). Mr. Lever is a Director with the Canadian Chartered Accountant’s Canadian Performance Reporting Board.


Chris Murray

Managing Director, Institutional Equity Research

Before joining AltaCorp, Mr. Murray was the senior Analyst covering a variety of Canadian industrial and transportation companies at PI Financial Corp. between 2010 and 2013. Prior to joining PI, he covered Aerospace, Airlines and Special Situations at CIBC World Markets (2006-2010) where he held both associate analyst and analyst roles. Before entering the financial services industry, Mr. Murray worked at a number of companies in the mining, manufacturing and capital goods industries for 15 years in various engineering and management roles. Mr. Murray completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (Mechanical) degree from Queen’s University with Honors and a Master of Business Administration degree with Distinction from York University. He is licensed as a professional engineer in Ontario and is a CFA charter holder.


Don Rawson

Managing Director, Institutional Equity Research

Mr. Rawson was former Managing Director in Oil and Gas Research at Mackie Research Capital from 2009 to 2011, and prior to that, he spent 6 years at Tristone Capital, covering Canadian junior and intermediate E&P companies. Prior thereto, Mr. Rawson acted in a number of corporate development roles, most recently as a consultant to Fording Coal and senior roles in corporate development and planning at PanCanadian Petroleum. In 2011, he was recognized by Starmine as one of the top Canadian analysts for earnings estimators, ranking first in the Oil & Gas industry and third among all industries. Mr. Rawson holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with Distinction from the University of Alberta, and an MBA with Honors from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.


Jeremy McCrea, CFA

Prior to joining AltaCorp, Mr. McCrea was an Associate Analyst at National Bank Financial covering the Canadian E&P Trust market from 2008 to 2010. Prior to that, he began his career at J.F. Mackie and Company (Mackie Research) in investment banking. Mr. McCrea holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, and is a CFA charter holder.


Jason Sawatzky

Director, Institutional Equity Research

Prior to joining AltaCorp, Mr. Sawatzky was an Associate Analyst covering oilfield services at Stifel Nicolaus from 2009 to 2011. Prior thereto, he worked at Cormark Securities covering oilfield services and E&P companies for 4 years. Mr. Sawatzky holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology/Psychology from the University of Calgary.


Patrick O'Rourke

Analyst, Institutional Equity Research

Prior to joining AltaCorp, Mr. O’Rourke was an Associate Analyst covering Junior and Intermediate Canadian E&P companies at Stifel Nicolaus from 2011 to 2013.  Prior to that Mr. O’Rourke held an associate role at Bissett Investment Management (a subsidiary of Franklin Templeton Investments) from 2007 to 2011.  Mr. O’Rourke holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Economics at McMaster University and is a CFA Charterholder.


Christian Erana

Associate, Institutional Equity Research

Christian joined AltaCorp in 2012, initially in a role supporting the research analyst covering Senior E&P and Oil Sands companies.  Prior to joining AltaCorp, Mr. Erana held positions at NAL Energy and Maxim Group, where he worked in capital accounting and as a financial analyst. Mr. Erana holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Finance) from the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, where he was also a fund manager in the Calgary Portfolio Management Trust.


Stuart Pattillo

Associate, Institutional Equity Research

Agri-Industry

Prior to joining AltaCorp, Mr. Pattillo was an associate trader on the commodity desk of a major Canadian bank in the natural gas sector in Calgary. Before transitioning to energy, he worked in the livestock and protein markets both in Alberta and Australia. He holds a BA in History from the University of King’s College at Dalhousie and an MBA from HEC Montréal at the Université de Montréal.


George Ulybyshev

Associate, Institutional Equity Research

Prior to joining AltaCorp, Mr. Ulybyshev was an Accountant at Citco (Canada) Inc. Prior to that, he interned at RBC Dominion Securities as an Associate. Mr. Ulybyshev holds an Honors BA degree in Economics from the University of Toronto, and is currently a Level III Candidate in the CFA program.


Klazina van den Berg

Associate, Institutional Research

Prior to joining AltaCorp, Ms. Van den Berg was a Research Assistant at the WM Young Centre for Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Research. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia, and is currently a CFA level II candidate.


Mark Westby

Associate, Institutional Equity Research

Prior to joining AltaCorp, Mr. Westby was a commercial litigation associate at Code Hunter LLP for two years. Prior to that, he was Manager of Project Controls and Scheduling at Cub Engineering Ltd. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance from the University of Calgary and a Law degree from the University of British Columbia.


Brodie Woods

Associate, Institutional Equity Research

Prior to joining AltaCorp, Mr. Woods was a Research Associate in Oilfield Services and Oil and Gas Research at Stifel Nicolaus, formerly Thomas Weisel Partners, covering a universe of Canadian drilling and oilfield services companies as well as several Canadian oil & gas companies. Prior to joining Thomas Weisel Partners he worked for Versant Partners Inc., formerly Petersen Capital Corporation, in the Investment Banking group as a financial analyst. Mr. Woods’ previous experience also includes working as a financial analyst in the Corporate Finance group at Cormark Securities Inc., formerly Sprott Securities Inc. Mr. Woods began his career in finance in 2005 as a summer associate in Sprott Securities’ Corporate Finance group. He holds a BA from the University of British Columbia and has completed various courses in financial modelling, transaction analysis and accounting. Outside of business, Mr. Woods donates his time to local soup kitchens.
